Minecraft Ice Caves: What the 26.4 Snapshots Mean for Seeds

November 2, 2026

Minecraft ice caves are the big worldgen addition in the next game drop, and Java players can already walk through them in the 26.4 snapshots. They generate under the colder Overworld biomes, so your snowy seeds just got more interesting. The awkward part: Mojang’s notes don’t yet say what happens to worlds you’ve already explored.

Where Minecraft ice caves generate

Mojang revealed the biome at Minecraft LIVE and added it in 26.4 Snapshot 3. The notes describe it as a new cave biome that “can generate under the colder biomes in the Overworld”. That gives seed hunters a simple starting rule: look under cold surface biomes first.

Mojang doesn’t publish a neat list of the surface biomes in those notes, so don’t assume every patch of snow has ice below it. Check in a test world before you put a seed on your shortlist.

Inside, the walls are mainly Packed Ice and Calcite. Icicles hang from the ceiling, large Packed Ice icicles rise from the floor and drop from above, and patches of Snow sit on the ground. Glow Lichen doesn’t generate here, so the natural glow comes from Ice Crystals, a new amethyst-style block that occasionally generates on the ground and emits light.

Ores, crevasses and other things that can ruin your day

Mining still works. Ores generate in pockets of Stone and Deepslate embedded in the ice, and Snapshot 3 adds ice cave versions of the usual placements for coal, copper, iron, gold, lapis, redstone and diamond. Mojang says these are identical to their normal counterparts, except that each one lays down a patch of stone or deepslate first.

Snapshot 4 added the part that will claim a few hardcore worlds. Brittle Ice cracks and eventually breaks once a player or mob steps on it, and it only generates naturally in ice caves, as part of a new crevasse feature. Frostbites cross it without trouble. Since Snapshot 6, Strays no longer crack it either, so the mobs chasing you may be safer on it than you are.

Icicles need some respect as well:

  • They damage anything they fall on and deal extra damage to entities that land on them.
  • They can grow up to 5 blocks long when pointing downward.
  • They only grow in spots without nearby light sources.
  • They break when exposed to nearby light, so your torches change the room.

The Frostbite and the Freezing effect

The new mob is the Frostbite, a zombie variant that swaps between melee and thrown Ice Balls depending on distance. Its melee hits apply Freezing, and each Ice Ball deals up to 4 damage, scaling down with velocity. It stands on Powder Snow and shrugs off freezing altogether.

Leather armor protects you from the freezing damage, as it does with Powder Snow, but it won’t stop the effect being applied or remove it. Pack it anyway.

There’s a farm idea in here too. Zombies and Husks turn into Frostbites inside Powder Snow, and Frostbites drop Ice Balls. Those brew into Freezing potions, and a Lingering Potion of Freezing crafted with eight Arrows gives you Arrows of Freezing. Mobs vulnerable to freezing take five times the damage, which should make these arrows handy.

A Snapshot 5 fix stopped Frostbites spawning in regular caves under cold biomes, so if you meet them underground, you’re probably near the real thing.

What Minecraft ice caves mean for existing seeds and old worlds

This is what you came for, and the honest answer is incomplete. None of the snapshot notes we read says whether ice caves will appear in chunks you’ve already generated. We won’t guess on Mojang’s behalf.

The closest hint is in Snapshot 1, which has nothing to do with ice. It says upgrading worlds from before Caves and Cliffs will now also generate sulfur caves below old chunks, and it adds a biome tag for what generates under those worlds. Ice caves aren’t mentioned there, and that change predates the biome, so it doesn’t tell us whether they’ll get the same treatment.

Our advice for now:

  • Treat any ice cave coordinates from a snapshot as provisional. Worldgen is still being adjusted between builds.
  • Recheck stronghold locations under cold biomes after release. Snapshot 5 added ice caves to the stronghold bias tag, and ruined portals now generate there too.
  • Don’t load your main survival world in a snapshot to test this. Mojang’s own warning is that testing versions can corrupt your world, so use a copy.

What to try in the 26.4 snapshots now

Snapshot notes are a moving target. Snapshot 6 alone fixed a bug where ice caves generated gravel, diorite and andesite blobs twice, and another where zombie villagers spawned as the plains variant instead of the snowy one. The biome is clearly still being tuned, and none of the notes we read gives a release date.

If you want a head start, enable snapshots in the launcher’s Installations tab, keep it in a separate folder and take a favorite cold seed underground to hunt for Minecraft ice caves. Builders can also grab the new Packed Ice Bricks and Snow Bricks while they’re there. Then run the same seed again on release day and compare the two.
